Walking Daisy: The Big Rock

Today, a big rock came to town where it will be parked for the day (they can only drive it at night when there is less traffic!). It's a giant, 340 ton granite boulder that is being moved from Riverside County to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art where it will star in an art installation entitled Levitated Mass by artist Michael Heizer.

It requires a truck almost a block long to carry it. According to LACMA informational materials it is the one of the largest megaliths moved since ancient times (and I bet they didn't have a truck!)

Everyone wanted to get a peek! (But the boulder was actually under wraps!)

It's not everyday a boulder on wheels rolls through the neighborhood!
Whole classes of school kids walked over to see the boulder. So did the adults. From noon to 7pm tonight there is going to be a party in honor of the rock's visit. A block, rock party if you will.

There will be a DJ playing rock tunes, kids doing rock painting, food vendors and neighbors rocking around the block!

All of the local news trucks from the major networks are covering the event!
See the big white mass? That's the rock! It's funny how such a simple thing has united so many. I think by far the best thing about this rock rolling through town has been the response from the community. Daisy and I ran into several friends who were also out walking around the rock. It got people out of their homes and taking time from daily routines to come look at something out of the ordinary.

I have heard that the best art elicits a response from viewers -I'd say this piece has done that with tremendous success! Rock on!
Daisy wasn't really moved by the rock, but she loved all the people- she likes a good party!
